HEMPSTEAD -- When Herman Edwards raised his voice for the first time as New York Jets coach, yelling at backup safety Nick Ferguson for leveling receiver Wayne Chrebet in a noncontact, full-squad drill Tuesday, players got so quiet that Ferguson could hear his jaw drop.

``I was kind of shocked,'' Ferguson said. ``I never really had a coach say anything like that to me.

``He's a mild-mannered person. But he was a little upset at how practice was going.''
