VIC: Union seeks urgent government talks over car job cuts

The car union has asked the federal government to suspend plans for tariff cuts as
vehicle manufacturer Mitsubishi considers reducing its Australian operations.

The union is also seeking urgent talks with the federal and Victorian governments as
fears grow that workforce layoffs could spread from South Australia to Victoria.

Mitsubishi revealed last week it may cut back manufacturing operations at its Adelaide
plant as part of a cost-cutting plan.

Australian Manufacturing and Workers Union Victorian secretary JULIUS ROE says he has
major concerns the Adelaide job losses could flow on to the Victorian industry.

He also says Canberra's policy over the GST has already led to a major collapse in
confidence in the industry, and a fall in vehicle sales.
