Qld: Townsville Mayor Tony Mooney to have his legal costs paid
The Australian Labor Party has agreed to pay around $67,000 in legal costs incurred
by Townsville mayor TONY MOONEY during last year's Criminal Justice Commission inquiry
into electoral rorting.
Mr MOONEY was one of only two people that former Supreme Court Judge TOM SHEPHERDSON,
who headed the inquiry, recommended for prosecution.
However, the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions dropped the charges for lack
of evidence and Mr MOONEY applied to the ALP to for his legal costs to be paid, as have
other Labor figures who were not charged.
Mr MOONEY has welcomed the news, telling the Courier-Mail that he's relieved.
Labor state secretary CAMERON MILNER says the decision brings to an end the party matters
as a result of the Shepherdson Inquiry.
